Balancing Mental Health and the EMS Life: How the Life and Sirens Crew Stays Grounded
Working in emergency medical services is more than just a job—it’s a lifestyle, a calling, and at times, an emotional rollercoaster. The Life and Sirens crew knows firsthand how the constant exposure to high-pressure situations, long shifts, and emotional strain can take a toll on mental health. That’s why we prioritize finding balance through adventure, sobriety, and a strong support system.
Finding Clarity in the Outdoors
One of the biggest ways we decompress and stay mentally healthy is by escaping into nature. Backpacking has become a cornerstone of our self-care routines, offering a much-needed break from the chaos of field EMS. Some of our favorite trips have taken us to incredible places like:
• Cumberland Island, GA: A serene getaway filled with wild horses, empty beaches, and trails that allowed us to disconnect and reset. This was when many of us were when our Licenses were posted by our state after paramedic school. Was a serial feeling to go off the grid as AEMTs and emerge as Licensed Paramedics.
• Death Valley, CA: An unforgiving yet breathtaking landscape that reminded us about resilience and patience—qualities that are essential both on and off the job. This was where we really found what it means to be part of our friend group, our family. So many long talks by the fire.
• Big Bend, TX: With its vast, rugged terrain and star-filled skies, this trip reinforced the importance of slowing down and embracing solitude and taking care of eachother. We always get closer to ourselves and each other on trips like this one. Experiencing the world with the people you are discovering yourself is a beautiful thing.
• Local camping adventures: Whether it’s a quick overnight trip or a weekend retreat, staying close to home still provides the opportunity to unplug and recharge. This is something we often take advantage of. Some of our favorite places include Sasquatch Farms in South Pittsburgh, TN and Savage Gulf, TN for backpacking. Perfect for rapid soul resets, “RSRs…?”
These adventures aren’t just about physical challenges; they give us the mental space to process our experiences, connect with each other, and return to work with fresh perspectives.
Sobriety: A Shared Commitment
As paramedics, we see the impact of substance abuse daily. For many of us, choosing sobriety has been a powerful decision that has brought clarity, focus, and a deeper sense of connection with ourselves and our crew. Supporting each other in this journey has been crucial—whether it’s attending events together, holding one another accountable, or simply being there when the stress of the job and life feels overwhelming.
We believe that our commitment to sobriety gives us a unique edge in the field. It sharpens our focus, improves our mental resilience, and allows us to lead by example for those we serve. Sobriety isn’t just about avoiding substances; it’s about making intentional choices that support our overall well-being.
Finding Community in Unexpected Places
When we’re not hitting the trails, we’re always on the lookout for spaces that align with our lifestyle. Which is becoming easier to do. One of our favorite places is KillJoy, an “anti-liquor” store (yeah “anti-liquor” store, idk— I made that up just now) in Nashville that offers a wide selection of non-alcoholic beverages and alternatives. It’s not just a place to grab a drink; it’s a space that fosters connection and promotes a lifestyle that aligns with our goals. From craft mocktails to alcohol-free beers, KillJoy offers a refreshing alternative for those who want to enjoy social experiences without compromising their sobriety. Oh and have you ever been to a Kava bar? No? Well you totally should.
Supporting Each Other Through It All
At the end of the day, it’s not just about the trips we take or the choices we make—it’s about the people who stand beside us through it all. EMS is tough, but having a crew that truly understands the highs and lows makes all the difference. We check in on each other, we create space for open conversations, and we remind ourselves that it’s okay to step away when we need to. This has allowed all of us to continue to grow in emotional maturity and empathy. I cannot tell you how special it is to watch the people around you grow and evolve into exceptionally imperfect humans. It’s inspiring. What we have is special and truly meant to be.
By prioritizing mental health through outdoor adventures, sobriety, and a strong support system, we’ve found a way to not just survive in EMS—but to thrive. If you’re struggling to find balance, we encourage you to seek out your own outlets, surround yourself with supportive people, and remember that it’s okay to prioritize your well-being.

Stay strong, stay sober if that’s something you’re after, and never stop exploring.
